March 2014

Spring arrives! After a brutal winter, our campus is grateful to have warmer temperatures and longer days. We thank our wonderful crew in Facilities and Campus Safety for helping us through the snow, ice, cold, and for reminding us to wear shoes with deep treads.

The Staff Assembly meeting was held on March 05, 2014 in the Lenfest Theater. The meeting agenda included messages from President Bobby Fong, Andy Feick, Brandon Hoover and Laura Moliken. See the attached presentations from Facilities, Athletics and Sustainability.

President Fong addressed the staff, mentioning the long, cold, snowy winter weather and the adverse effects on the campus, staff and morale. He talked about the current winter weather policy and the need to revise it. Bobby also raised the subject of declining applications. The college hopes to enroll 440 freshmen this year, however, there were not as many applications received as in previous years. This trend is nationwide. Missy Bryant and Bobby asked that the staff join in the recruitment of accepted students by sending out 5 postcards to 5 parents of the students telling them what a great place Ursinus is. Volunteer to write notes to parents of accepted students.

Executive CommitteeCollege Diversity Committee
The Ursinus College Diversity Committee invites comments and suggestions with regard to the College’s current Diversity Statement. All staff will soon receive an e-mail from Sheryl Goodman, which asks for your input. Your thoughts are valued, and you are encouraged to complete this survey and offer your feedback.

selfieSelfies: What Do Staff Do Outside of Work?
Outside of her day job as our campus sustainability planner, Shannon Spencer works at the Perkiomen Valley Junior High East and high school on their spring musical theater productions. This year's middle school production was Mulan. This is Shannon's 5th year as the set artist for the middle school and her first as the set designer. Shannon loves the opportunity to design and paint sets as part of the creative team, work with other parents (including staff member and painter Ingrid Zepp), and work with the students. This year's high school production of Once on this Island will be showing March 28, 29 and 30. Details>

UconnectStaff Affairs Committee Introduces: UConnect
This program will partner with HR to develop as a part of the New Employee Orientation Program. UConnect has received funding from CPPC of $500 and will provide new employees with an information packet, a campus tour and a U-connector, a staff volunteer to serve as a “connection to the newly hired employee to help them become comfortable with the Ursinus culture. Details>

25 Years CelebrationProfessional Development Committee Report
Thanks to those staff members who attended the StrengthsQuest workshop in January, and the workshop led by Carol Cirka (Communicating with Colleagues: Active Listening and Feedback Skills). There will be another StrengthsQuest workshop, led by Missy Bryant on June 18thThe Committee is pursuing speakers for upcoming Professional Development talks and workshops.  In the fall, we hope to have an Alumni Speakers Series in the works.  If there are any suggestions for the Committee, please contact Carolyn Weigel.

Gary White Receives Award Upcoming Events & Opportunities for Staff
The first Staff Coffee Break was held in February. The event was very well attended and featured the Athletics and Admissions Departments. Thanks to Logan Duffie for organizing! Next coffee break is planned for April. Get ready for the Walking Challenge, which kicks off in April. There are several volunteer opportunies this Spring, find out how you can get involved! FacilitiestDepartment Spotlight: Athletics
The athletics staff works almost year-round, because of traditional and non-traditional seasons. Thirty-five percent of Ursinus students participate in 25 sports under 18 head coaches (12 full time); 60 assistant coaches (4 full time); and 17 administrators and support staff. Some 1,500 students participate in intramurals. The Department refers to Team Ursinus, the philosophy of how they work together – as educators first, guiding and mentoring students through the avenues that sports offer. View Photo>
