Schellhase Commons Earns Architectural Honors

The Associated Builders and Contractors of Delaware has recognized Ursinus College’s new community gateway with its Merit Award.

The award is part of its annual Excellence in Construction awards and is a nod to the unique design of the Commons. It was presented to Bancroft Construction, the builder of the Commons.

Named by Will Abele ’61 and Joan Abele in honor of former assistant professor of religion, wrestling coach and executive secretary for the alumni association Richard T. Schellhase ’45 and his wife Kay Schellhase ’57, the 17,305-square-foot two story structure—which incorporates historic Keigwin Hall—includes a coffeehouse, bookstore, and a “home base” for the college’s admissions team comprised of 10 offices for our admissions counselors.

Perhaps most importantly, it connects generations of Ursinus students, serving as the place that prospective students and their families will come when they first step foot on campus, and a common gathering spot for the thousands of alumni that return to Collegeville throughout the year.

This winter, members of the neighboring community are invited to a limited opening of the Commons from November 30 through December 23. Visit our website for more.
