Citation

Announced by last year’s award winner, Dr. Ryan Walvoord

The recipient of this year’s award joined Ursinus in 2010 as a faculty member of the Biology Department and Neuroscience Program. Since joining, she has encouraged and empowered her students to excel in her rigorous courses and to envision themselves as current and future leaders in STEM fields. Her excellence in teaching has positively impacted her students during their time at Ursinus and well beyond. It is a sincere honor and pleasure to announce that this year’s winner of the Laughlin Award for Distinguished Teaching is Dr. Carlita Favero, Associate Professor of Biology.

Students highlight Professor Favero’s skill at incorporating a breadth of active teaching methods and strategies that assist in student engagement. One student notes that she “puts extraordinary effort into making sure students of all learning styles can succeed.” Another observed that “she also puts a great deal of enthusiasm into her teaching, lecturing, and in her office hours” and that her style of active learning helps students “self-learn more effective ways of learning.” She creates positive classroom environments in which exchange of ideas and questions are encouraged and welcomed.

In addition to her talent in the classroom, Professor Favero provides patience, inspiration, and motivation to her students, enabling them to achieve more than they anticipated. Students are effusive in praising her personalized teaching and mentorship, with one declaring that “every class, she encourages me despite my misunderstandings of the information and supports me in my endeavors to achieve.” Others similarly comment that “Dr. Favero encourages me during office hours to study the information that even seemed a bit scary or intimidating which is slowly helping me find courage and grit within the work I do” and “she greatly supports me both educationally and personally as I strive to achieve in my science courses.” Professor Favero’s teaching and mentorship further translate to the growth of her research students, with one recognizing, “I didn’t know what I was going to do with a degree in neuroscience… without the research experience I’ve gained from Dr. Favero, I would not have even applied to graduate school… She has truly changed my life and my trajectory.”

Please join me in congratulating Professor Favero for her outstanding achievement as a teacher.
