From the Field to the Conference: Opportunities through Sports

Brooke Overly ’18

I am very fortunate to work in a role that I am extremely passionate about. As the assistant commissioner of the Atlantic East Conference, an NCAA Division III conference, I have the ability to impact the lives of many student-athletes. Whether it’s providing students the opportunity to compete in their respective sports, serving as the conference SAAC advisor, or creating educational programming on mental health awareness and diversity and inclusion, I truly have the ability to influence the student-athlete experience.

Passion is always something I have valued and desired in a career. I tend to produce my best ideas and work when it’s involved with something I care deeply about. I’ve always loved to compete and play high level sports. Frankly, it’s why I chose to attend Ursinus. Ursinus was the perfect fit that allowed me to perform at an extraordinary level academically and athletically. Choosing to be a part of the Ursinus College field hockey legacy was one of the best things I have ever done. While I am grateful for the championship titles and victories, it’s the trials and seasons of growth I experienced that changed my life.

My collegiate field hockey experience at Ursinus shaped me into the person I am so proud to be today. Because of my Ursinus field hockey experience, I discovered my strength as a fearless female leader who can encourage and positively impact the lives of others. I uncovered the importance of work ethic and how to put my entire heart into things I want to achieve. Most importantly, I learned the true meaning of gratitude. I was lucky to have the opportunity to go to an incredible school, play a sport I love, and grow into a successful woman. It was through my student-athlete experience, as well as my position as an athletic communications assistant and coordinator of intramural athletics, that I realized my passion for giving others the same opportunities I had to develop through sports.

I am beyond grateful for my Ursinus experience—and especially grateful to the community and athletic administration staff—because my four years in college helped me pursue a career that I love and care so deeply about.
