Titles: Creative Director of the Berman Museum of Art
Director of Museum Studies
Associate Professor of Art History
Specialty: Contemporary Art; Artistic Collaboration and Art Collectives; Visual Culture of HIV/AIDS; Gender Studies in Art and Art History
Favorite Artists: I am presently pre-occupied by work by artists Lisa Reihana, Mari Katayama, Martine Gutierrez, and Kader Attia
Favorite Berman exhibition or memory: Justin Favela’s The Valley of Oaxaca (2018-19) was a critically insightful and visually stunning post-colonial appropriation of Jose Maria Velasco’s 1888 oil painting. The potency of this piece derived, in part, from its playful use of materials and its immersive effects on visitors that reflect contributions of the Latinx diaspora on contemporary visual culture. The infectious camaraderie that Favela created in the realization of this project is a highlight of my Berman experience.
What I love most about the museum: The museum gives visual and experiential form to the interdisciplinary values of liberal education and life-long learning and curiosity.
