Leverage Digital Tools with the Help of LIT Student Consultants

As Johanna Mellis, assistant professor of history, observed, “Learning new digital technology can be one of the most frustrating things for people to do, regardless of their age and educational level.” Fortunately, the Library and IT Department hires Digital Liberal Arts (DLA) Fellows who are available to help faculty and students learn how to use a variety of technology.

These technologies include video production & editing software, podcasting equipment, digital storytelling & curation tools, website creation, and more! They also partner with faculty interested in adding or enhancing digital components in their curriculum.

Current DLA Fellows are Tiffini-Amber Eckenrod, a senior History major, and Rahsaan Sailes, a sophomore Neuroscience major. They are available to meet with faculty and students on Wednesday and Friday afternoons via appointment and can support in-class workshops. Last semester, DLA Fellows had 47 appointments, the majority of which were one-on-one consultations with students across disciplines who were assigned digital projects.

Instructional Technology Librarian Christine Iannicelli and the DLA Fellows worked extensively with Johanna Mellis and her students in the Spring. Johanna spoke highly of this partnership. “[Their] efforts in the in-class workshops alleviated a significant weight off my shoulders, as I did not need to be an expert or teach students how to use the tools myself (which I did need to do in my former program). [Christine] also arranged to meet with students (or schedule for a DLA Fellow to meet with them) one-on-one, to ensure that they received the individual attention that they needed to learn how to use the tools.”
