History professor receives book contract for work on Chinese culture

Professor Hugh Clark (History & East Asian Studies) has contracted with the University of Hawaii Press to publish his book manuscript Civilizing the Lands Beyond: Transformation and Accommodation in Southeast China through the 1st Millennium CE.

Professor Clark’s manuscript grew out of his decades-long study of society and culture in southern Fujian Province in the late 1st to early 2nd millennia. He became increasingly uncomfortable with the orthodox narrative that cast China’s expansion into the lands south of the Yangtze River as the triumph of the culture of northern China. Clark argues instead that what we call “Chinese culture” today was an outgrowth of centuries of engagement and tension between North and South that deeply transformed classical Chinese civilization. The book, which will be Professor Clark’s third, should be available by late 2015.
