Student Work Featured in KOP Exhibition

Three Ursinus College students and one alumna are being featured in a new art installation that celebrates artists of color within Montgomery County.

The exhibition is presented by the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board and will be on view at the King of Prussia Mall through March 31. Among the 15 artists whose work is on display are Kayla Cayemitte ’23, Abigail Coachi ’22, Jailene Rodriguez ’21, and Mekha Varghese ’23.

Rachel Riley, Valley Forge Tourism’s associate vice president of communications, said the installation is “a wonderful way to provide exposure for these incredible artists.” It is part of the Tourism and Convention Board’s ongoing Arts Montco initiative, which highlights more than 200 arts and entertainment venues, attractions, and galleries in the county.

Varghese used spices like turmeric and red chili powder to create a portrait of an Indian woman. She said, “I created a work that was colorful and sort of hyper realistic in a way that I hadn’t ever done before. To have it as part of this exhibition…that’s pretty awesome.”

Coachi’s work is a digital self-portrait of which she says, “I tend to think I always need to be perfect to be perceived by others in a good light…However, as I grew older, I began to realize…it is the light within us that should be recognized. Therefore, in my piece, I am not wearing makeup, my hair isn’t done, and I am holding a mirror to reflect that I do not need to always be perfect.”

Coachi was interviewed as part of a KYW-AM news story about the exhibit, which can be heard here.

The installation, located in the connector corridor across from Macy’s, is free and open to the public.
