Ursinus Chemists attend the 79th Intercollegiate Student Chemists Conference on Saturday, April 11th at Muhlenberg College

Ursinus students showcase their research work at the ISCC held at Muhlenberg College.

The Intercollegiate Student Chemists Conference (ISCC) is one of the oldest, continuously meeting, annual conventions of its kind in the United States. Five chemistry faculty and eleven chemistry and BCMB majors travelled Saturday morning, April 11th, to Muhlenberg College for the 79th Intercollegiate Student Chemists Conference.  This convention is an opportunity for undergraduate students to showcase their original chemistry research findings through 12 minute presentations.

This year three Ursinus students presented their research at the ISC Convention.   In the Biochemistry session, BCMB major, Jenna Pellegrino (2017), presented her work “Creation and Characterization of Rubrerythrin and Symerythrin Model Proteins”  followed by fellow BCMB major, Ivan Sokirniy (2015), with his work “Semiquinone Stabilization Via de novo Designed Protein Scaffolds”.  Both students were mentored by Dr. Amanda Reig. Lucas Bricker (2015), mentored by Dr. Mark Ellison, presented his research, “Analysis of Carbon Nanotubes as Molecular Conduits “, in the physical chemistry session.

After the morning presentations by the student chemists, the convention’s keynote speaker, Dr. Emily Weiss of Northwestern University, delivered her talk titled “Energy Conservation at Nanoscopic Interfaces” before the convention’s closing award ceremony.

Ursinus College will be hosting the 80th Intercollegiate Student Chemists Conference in April 2016.
