Director of Athletic Development




The Director of Athletic Development primary responsibility is to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current potential donors with the capacity to make gifts of $25,000 over a period of five (5) years with a concentration on potential donors associated with Ursinus athletic programs including coaches, student athletes, alumni, current parents and past parents. Works collaboratively with colleagues in the Advancement Office, Athletic Office and high-level volunteers to create and implement plans that result in major gifts and annual gifts for the College. Extensive national travel required.


  • Create opportunities to conduct face-to-face meetings and strategic documents for the purposes of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding an assigned portfolio of approximately 150 current and prospective donors according to best practice standards.
  • Document all contacts in Razor’s Edge per established Advancement Office guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Manage donor relationships according to Advancement Office’s established prospect management guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Create detailed cultivation/solicitation/stewardship plans for the assigned prospective prospects and donors each year and prepare briefing documents when needed.
  • Conduct personal visits independently or with key volunteers/college staff/college faculty with 10-15 donors and donor prospects each month.
  • Work to achieve yearly revenue goal; work with department colleagues to identify, qualify, and assign new major gift prospects; work collaboratively with colleagues to plan cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies/activities for current and prospective donors.
  • Work with all head coaches to determine and execute all annual team solicitations (mail and email) and stewardship efforts including thank you notes, calls, small group events. Additionally update all head coaches with gift reports bi-monthly basis.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Ursinus College history, academic and extracurricular programs, and its faculty, students and administration; maintain a thorough understanding of the College’s current priorities and initiatives of the faculty and administration.
  • Plan, execute and attend appropriate athletic alumni and donor engagement events related to assigned responsibilities; participates in departmental and professional training programs to increase expertise in profession.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is required with a preference for one in communications, financial services, marketing/sales, educational management or fundraising.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a proven and successful gifts officer closing gifts of $25,000 or above.
  • A track record of success in fundraising, financial services, marketing/sales, educational management or other directly related advancement or development area.
  • Self-starting strategic thinker whose hallmark qualities include being persistent, being personable, and possessing a desire to succeed.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and an ability to relate to a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • A personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier college of liberal arts, and the ability to work in a goal-oriented environment are required.
  • A valid driver’s license and use of personal car.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to sit for long periods at personal computer performing related functions
  • Availability and flexibility to travel as needed
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary

Departmental Accountabilities:

  • Works collaboratively with colleagues and team members in the Advancement Office and throughout the college. Participates in Advancement Office meetings and other key college staff meetings
  • Possesses knowledge and experience with computer programs that support the Advancement Department including Microsoft Office programs and Raiser’s Edge
