The Berman Museum of Art Communications Assistant produces high-quality, compelling, and accurate content for marketing and communications outreach that supports the Museum’s strategic goals. Creates and manages multimedia, multi-platform content to promote the Berman’s reputation, exhibitions, and programs. Develops a deep knowledge of the Berman’s key audiences and creatively works to grow engagement. Collaborates with Berman staff, Ursinus College Communications staff, and College administrators, faculty, students, and alumni as well as external partners (particularly in the areas of web development and graphic identity) to effectively convey the Berman’s brand messages. This is a part time position working 24 to 28 hours per week.


  • Conceives and develops smart, engaging, accurate content for website, print and digital materials, social media, and other marketing and communications tools as needed, with a focusing on writing and editing for the digital space, especially website content
  • Collaborates with Berman and Ursinus College Communications staff to create, curate and manage content that supports strategic initiatives and positions the Berman as a leading academic museum that links the study of the visual and liberal arts in an interdisciplinary way
  • Writes, edits and proofreads clear, concise content for blog posts, news stories, press releases, email communications, social media, web pages and/or promotional materials that resonate with targeted audiences and is in accordance with best practices
  • Monitors and maintains accuracy of Berman website content, creating new or revised copy and refreshing digital images in consultation with Museum staff using web-based content management tools
  • Solicits and organizes content from Berman staff for use in communications and marketing initiatives, including creation and maintenance of Berman website calendar events for the academic year, Ursinus calendar listings, and the Museum’s audience contact databases
  • Solicits/creates, organizes and manages digital images and video in effective ways that maximize the potential of communications in every medium
  • Understands audience behavior and needs to develop impactful content; identifies and evaluates outreach ideas and tools (platforms, channels) to improve user experience, build audience engagement and maximize the Berman story
  • Assists with external news media as needed, recognizing and pitching media-friendly stories that communicate the Berman’s strategic messages
  • Stays current on web and content marketing trends and innovation and understand data analytics and insights to inform all work
  • Ensures that all print, digital and multimedia content follows Berman Museum of Art brand identity design guidelines
  • Assists with crisis communications and issues management as necessary

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field
  • At least two years of writing experience, preferably in website, editorial, and marketing content
  • Strong skills in writing, editing, and proofreading. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated experience in writing editorial and promotional content, with the ability to produce crisp, compelling, optimized copy while maintaining brand messaging, persuasiveness, and readability
  • Demonstrated creative and storytelling instincts
  • Demonstrated experience as a visual communicator, with proven success in the use of digital images and video, with fluency in multimedia content production
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment and remain calm under dueling pressures
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to problem solve and complete tasks on time with strong attention to detail; self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong sense of design and experience working with professional designers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content management systems, Adobe design software, Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel), and social media tools. Experience with Premier Pro/Final Cut X preferred
  • Understanding of Google Analytics (or other metrics tools), keyword research and SEO best practices preferred

Work Environment:

  • Ability to sit for long periods at personal computer performing related functions
  • Availability and flexibility to travel as needed
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs

Departmental Accountabilities:

  • Works collaboratively with colleagues, team members, and students in the Berman Museum and throughout the College. Participates in Berman Museum meetings and other key College staff meetings
  • Provides support to office leadership, as needed, for priority projects. Serves to help educate faculty and staff about the Berman Museum and its mission and goals
