Sustainability Solutions Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship

The post-baccalaureate fellowship seeks to advance the capacities of an early career professional to conduct interdisciplinary work on sustainability issues and problem-solving efforts by the College to address these issues. A key area of focus will be on day-to-day oversight of select programs and general support of capacity building and outreach activities with all office programming. In addition, this person will also undertake responsibilities, as appropriate, that are currently being worked on by the Director of Sustainability. This support will allow the Director of Sustainability to provide greater focus to broad strategic goals and endeavors connected to the well-being of people, planet, and place, such as assessing the integration of key performance indicators as they relate to the college’s responsibilities to the Okanagan Charter and the Second Nature Climate Leadership Commitment.

Time Allocation:

  • 50% of time: Farm and Food Forest direct oversight (year-round)
  • 30% of time: Capacity building in programming
  • 20% of time: Community outreach


  • Supervise and mentor student Agroecology Fellows at the Campus Farm and Food Forest to achieve success with program goals that include land management and food production activities at each location.
  • Oversee the “faculty/staff food plots” and “student food plots” programs located at the Campus Farm so that participants have the foundation and information they need to be successful.
  • Assist faculty members with integrating curricular activities and research projects on the theme of sustainable food growing into classes and co-curricular activities, with a particular focus on well-being of people, planet and place across the campus community.
  • As Co-advisor, advise and contribute to, together with the Director, campus organizations such as Wismer on Wheels, Ursinus College Environmental Action, and Re-imagine Ursinus-Collegeville
  • Assist the Director with relationship building and direction-setting for the Office through events, projects, and communications between students, faculty, and staff at the College and community members. This activity can take many forms, such as presenting to first-year advisee cohorts, classes, and representing the Office of Sustainability at community events.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. in appropriate field (e.g., Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Biology or Other with minor in Food Studies, Environmental Studies, and/or Biology). Expected undergraduate graduation date in 2023.
  • Experience in growing food, preferably in a college farm setting, and an ethos that centers food justice and sustainability.
  • Ability to work well with diverse community partners, both on campus and off. These include College administrators, other staff, faculty, students, alumni, and parents as well as diverse organizations (e.g. local non-profits, companies) and entities (e.g., Delaware Tribe of Indians).
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines independently of, and together with, the Director of Sustainability and other stakeholders/partners.
  • Ability to organize and accomplish varying tasks to achieve project outcomes and set daily work schedule/activities.
  • Possess good written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze quantitative data.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate students on land management and food production activities, including ensuring that Agroecology Fellows and volunteers are knowledgeable about food safety and take efforts to reduce risks, applicants should likewise be familiar with Good Agricultural Practices and relevant food safety protocols (by attending Produce Grower Certification Training within the first six months of hiring).
