Post-doctoral Research Fellow - Statistics (2 yr)




The post-doctoral researcher will work with Dr Leslie New, Assistant Professor of Statistics, to develop statistical models to investigate physiological responses of individual long-lived animals to ecological change and model the resulting population consequences and how they may vary under different scenarios of future environmental change. The data set will consist of baleen hormone data from bowhead whales and will require close collaboration with researchers from George Mason University and Northern Arizona University. This is an NSF grant funded position for 24 months.

The position is suited both for statisticians who are interested in ecological data, as well as ecologists and biologists who have a strong quantitative skill set.


  • Develop statistical models to define transfer functions linking short-term changes in individual physiology in response to external drivers to long-term population dynamics
  • Use individual based models to assess the population consequences of disturbance
  • Actively collaborate with researchers at George Mason University and Northern Arizona University
  • Prepare manuscripts for submission to scientific journals
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences
  • Develop reproducible code that can be shared with collaborators, funders and be included for review with scientific publications
  • Supervise, train, and assist undergraduate researchers

Requirements and Qualifications

  • PhD in related discipline (e.g., statistics, computational biology, statistical ecology), or anticipation of the degree being awarded within a few months of the start date for the position
  • Experience with Bayesian hierarchical models and individual-based models
  • Coding experience with R, stan or python
  • A successful record of scientific publication
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across disciplines
  • Excellent interpersonal, trouble-shooting, organizational, and communication skills
  • The ability to work proactively and independently
  • A background in biology is a plus, but not required for the position
  • Strong computational skills are a plus, but not required for the position
